Oramatei is a Maasai word meaning “to be revitalized” or “to be made new.” It reflects the transformation at the heart of this initiative, creating opportunities for women and communities to move from hardship and unsafe livelihoods toward dignity, skills, and sustainable economic opportunity.

Located along the Nairobi–Namanga Highway in Kajiado, Oramatei Pitstop is being developed as a community-centered hub for enterprise, skills development, education and opportunity.

From the Quarry to a New Beginning

The journey began when our team visited the Kajiado quarries and found women working in the open-pit quarries. Many were breadwinners for their families, yet their livelihoods depended on physically demanding work in intense heat and clouds of dust. A typical day involved digging and packing soapstone rubble into around five 50-kilogram bags, for which they earned just KES 20 (approximately USD 0.13) per bag. Even after a full day's labour, income was far from guaranteed; buyers were irregular, and the women could wait days or even weeks before their rubble was sold.

The cost was not only financial. Constant exposure to quarry dust contributed to respiratory problems, chronic coughing and other chest-related illnesses, while the harsh working environment placed their health and safety at risk.

For women carrying the responsibility of providing for their families, leaving the quarries was not simply a matter of choosing another job. They needed a viable alternative, one that could provide income while protecting their health and dignity.

That became the starting point for Oramatei.

The women are supported to develop new skills in Maasai beadwork, sewing and fish-fly crafting. Beyond skills training, they are given opportunities to participate in conferences and events where they can celebrate and showcase Maasai culture, market their handcrafted products, and connect with wider markets and potential partners.

Today, their craftsmanship is creating products for markets beyond their communities. Fish flies produced by the women have been exported to the UK, USA and parts of Africa.

Oramatei Pitstop Vision

We envision Oramatei Pitstop becoming a model for community-led economic empowerment, one that can eventually be adapted and replicated in other communities facing similar challenges. By creating a place where people can learn, create, sell, earn and grow, Oramatei aims to turn local talent into sustainable opportunity. The next chapter is to establish Oramatei Pitstop as a vibrant community destination along the Nairobi–Namanga highway. The Pitstop will bring together several complementary components:

 A Local Marketplace
A dedicated space where women can display and sell Maasai beadwork, sewn products, fish flies and other locally produced crafts, connecting them directly with travellers, customers and new markets.

A Skills & Enterprise Hub
A practical training environment where women can learn, refine and diversify their skills, receive mentorship and develop products that can generate sustainable incomes.

Food & Refreshments
A welcoming food area offering freshly prepared local meals and refreshments, creating additional opportunities for local enterprise while serving travellers along the busy highway.

Clean & Accessible Facilities
Clean restrooms and basic hospitality facilities provide travellers with a safe, comfortable, and much-needed place to stop during their journey.

Early Childhood Centre
A safe and nurturing space for young children, particularly supporting working mothers who are building their livelihoods.

Investing in the Next Generation

Oramatei's vision extends beyond today's livelihoods. In the future, the Pitstop will create opportunities for IT and robotics training for children, helping young people develop digital skills, explore technology and participate in an increasingly digital economy. This creates an intergenerational approach to development: empowering mothers today while preparing their children for tomorrow.
